Northern Boom Company records, 1890-1920.

Articles of incorporation (1890), logbook (1898-1918), cashbook (1911-1920), journal (1890-1920), and ledger (1890-1920) of this company formed to drive logs and construct and improve booms on the Mississippi River from Brainerd, Crow Wing County (Minn.), to Pokegama Falls, Itasca County (Minn.). The incorporators and first board of directors were: Joel B. Bassett, Edwin C. Whitney, Samuel Simpson, and John B. Atwater, all of Minneapolis, and Eldridge M. Fowler of Chicago, Illinois. This firm was a Weyerhaeuser affiliate.

Bassett was born in Wolfboro, New Hampshire (March 17, 1816), the son of Daniel and Abigail Bassett. He moved to Minnesota (1852) where he worked in the lumber trade and lived in Minneapolis for the remainder of his life, except for the years 1865-1869 when he served as Indian agent at the Chippewa Agency at Crow Wing. He married Aurilia Carpenter (1857) and died in Los Angeles, California on February 1, 1912. More biographical information will be found in the first fold...
